Mikaela Castledine #87 Seven Thousand Three Hundred and Eighty

Ask a mathematical boy
to figure me some numbers
he leans back
looks into the distance
waves away some conversation
tells me my answer

He does me the great courtesy of asking
if I have heard of triangle numbers
leans forward
shows me his workings
on the back of his sister's sketch pad
checks the calculations done in his head
nods decisively

I now know the exact number of stitches
in my next sculpture
can work out with my inferior maths
the amount of cord to order
the exact cost
it's an art really

He is all edges and angles
a misheard mathematical phrase
from an Indian accented teacher of my childhood
he leans back into the couch
quietly adding up
to something big
