Sarah St Vincent Welch #1 - Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay

on the last day
we waded out
out through the bay
to Cerberus's
hulk

I find you singing
of flight and air
clouds
mazed cities
quiet kitchens
statues and stars
your gifts

our kitchen this morning
cracks with stories
(none mine)
is built again
as the fiddle practices
over us all

in the old year's night
in blue violent haze
so many people waded back
waded back
through the bay
to me

Sarah St Vincent Welch #341 Project 366

Cerberus in sight
the new old year’s night
it began in Half Moon Bay
the hulk submerged
we dived

a year marked each day
cheek to the moon’s phase
poet’s song I listened
when I woke
slept
artist’s brush and light’s captured
language’s recasting
shimmering in the crucible
sunset
we wade and swim

days and nights counting in

Lizz Murphy #3 — Greyhounds Make Great Pets (after Sarah St Vincent Welch)

Greyhounds make great pets
A response to 'Half Moon Bay' by Sarah St Vincent Welch

Legs like risen loaves of bread
our heads lolling at the speeding
landscape not taking in the all brown
The odd tree is a thumb swell of khaki
we yearn for an old man kangaroo
an emu a camel a highway robbery
some re-run of history get another
air-con breakdown Someone else’s
road trip reminds me of this and the
coach line I will never travel with again
I am now thinking of greyhound racing
and the increasing number of greyhounds
out walking the elegant arc of them
lovingly re-homed instead of you know
what still they have that forlorn mien
A guy on a TV ad confesses to his young
wife I curse she is not your mother so
anyway okay they’ve got a quick loan
we don’t have to hear from them again
and the cat will survive at any cost
Boats scour the water surface white
spectators on open water in their own
race and we on the verge of losing Gonski
reform of failing our children our children
failing falling our children wading neck deep

Kit Kelen #940 - victims of instinct

940
victims of instinct

cosy up with to be more
and do the inside out illusion
love to be loved
and that's a song
sometimes we go upside down
top to tail in out
or round the tree
believe me
and I know you do
it's just this once I cannot lie
here hold this while I come for you
and sing so no one else can see
it's deep in the eyes we love
skip with it step sprung
led by the moon
by the nose
by the way
I am a crocodile sometimes
moat my whim
and dress the part
often begins with conversation
and must be only half at bay
you'll get a glisten after – love that
though there could be grumble up to
or even a cat attacks
once swan swam or rather glide
and all anticipation
that's when walk on air
dream dark in the belly
till rub tug – rude enough for you?
have we the skills, the nous?
you always come to me as a question
and you can call me tiger, do it
when any word would break the spell
faster, slower, further, less
you wouldn't think a body could
but then a body's done it
how much of each does other know?
the heart is listening here for us
and sometimes waits as well
we call out heart to heart all soulful
have a mind to it
you'll lose your head
and you could give
call deed and it can come with title
there are vast estates in skin
peasants have suffered from
and sometimes they have overcome
indelicate these manners
set to sea hammock
slow motion in whale
elephant so
out of the bath
sometimes weakness overcomes
it only helps me to be creature
hello you
well oiled machine
and beautiful music
we cannot keep
pitter patter
snug in sack
with steady rain
and in another skin altogether
I have instincts
of the victim
cringe when
out of the egg
all leap
