Mikaela Castledine #61 It's Like Glass Blowing

it's like glass blowing
writing stories
heating that molten glob of an idea
pulling a gather
blowing it into life with your own breath
twirling to look at it from all angles
as it expands
hand blown a story can be annealed
rolled finished in the glory hole
but it is really only
when an editor wants
to cold work it to some new perfection
and you want to say
but this is why I shaped it like that
that you remember
that you need to punty it onto a new base
crack it clean from
it's beginnings
rework the rim and upper body
shape the lip so that no scarring shows
and this is what makes you think
writing stories is just like glass blowing
if we didn't break them off
they would still be attached to our mouths
