#188 Kevin Brophy 'Some questions'

#188 ‘Some questions’

When the old mistakes go un-forgiven,
When sins become the bitter herbs we’ve taken,

When we search the floors for coins forgotten
As though what’s lost might soon be found again,

When the years become our sorrows’ lessons,
And there’s no turning back without an angel

At the rock, without a heart that’s slow to anger,
without a messenger who’s found your door,

What are the lessons for
If they can’t embrace us when we call

What are the lessons for
When answers are hammered to a wall

What are the lessons for, my love,
If they leave us standing at the door

What were the lessons for
If they couldn’t bring us to our feet

What are the lessons for
that can’t explain the victory in defeat

or why we turn and turn with love
despite our old mistakes,

despite the wrongs our human hand still makes.

  1. Kevin, an important poem. Hard and beautiful. Pretty damn good.
