Tree people, hung

from branches. Who put them there, & why?
That I’ve just passed through an arch of submission
explains nothing. A knife-throwers target,
I wake up in recovery (in a bed for which, apparently,
I’ve paid one shekel). Three nurses rush past.
Each carries a huge pair of shears. They’ve been sent
to rescue the pilot trapped in the cockpit
of his crashed Messerschmitt. Is this
the explanation? I’ll never know.
