Moyra Donaldson - Strange the things one remembers #15

Strange the things one remembers

Like bubbles,
rising
to the surface.

Today I remembered
trying
to light a cigarette
in the breeze blowing
on top of the Acropolis,
forty two years ago
this month.

  1. Funny how it happens. I often remember successfully lighting a cigarette in the wind at the beach with a pseudo-Zippo lighter I was given as a present, c. 2000. Have since given up smoking, but it's odd (and oddly comforting) how it recurs from time to time — as just then!

  2. Oh my, ditto for cigarettes, lighters, the Acropolis - perhaps, residual nicotine, surfacing?!

  3. I feel I've missed out :) This poem does that - lovely.
