Robert Verdon, #209, Canberra

there are few

monuments in this
ideal city

this gilded village
this bush retreat

of graphite roads
through paper parks

a drawing board
come almost to life

exciting
as voting

a revolution
safe in bed

socialism and drains
now only drains

a plumber’s paradise
a developer’s dreamscape

a thousand suburbs
caged in ennui

monument itself
to the defeat of idealism
