Kit Kelen #366.umpteenth - because this is poetry

366.umpteenth
because this is poetry

not some dusty book
but doing it

not to stand around
having written
at cocktails
in nibblies
like a walking prize

not the crib
not the critique
not the chords accompanying

this is the wish
made sure from the dream

not the ant's trail off to work
but this is the meaning side of the song

wisp of it
and no one can catch

all our talk's to this end

this is where words leave off
job done

hats off to creation
face it
this is how we're here

Red Cone (LF)#330-Thirty six missing

Thirty six missing
can I pretend for the sake of my ego
that I have not failed to post every day
can I say that I have sketched and painted
more than thirty six paintings not posted
which is true
she  boasted
is it my ego or am I competitive with myself
or with the whole wide world
day dreaming on...
ego
where does it go
what is it anyway
what colour is it
what note does it shout
what is the flavour
the taste is in my mouth

blue agapanthus bloom in my garden

Mikaela Castledine #366 The End

I have never subscribed
to the knowing of endings
don't read the last page first
or crane around the corners
or consult clairvoyants
to look ahead
just walk steady
watch where you place your feet
the end will get here soon enough
and you’ll lift your face to it
and smile
and thank it politely for coming

Thanks to everyone for this year of living poetically. It has been wonderful to have shared this time with such an amazing group of writers and I hope to be able to keep in touch with as many of you as possible. I wish you a fulfilling and creative year ahead. All the best, Mikaela xx

Kit Kelen #366.next one - he considers the idea of painting a way out of the year

Magdalena Ball #45: Every Last Crumb

Every Last Crumb

scanning signs of hope
among tessellated squares
blocks to triangles
haven’t we been here before
new world pressed against the old

trying is enough
remembering at the shore
cold water washing
another morning breaking
through night’s fear, reaching for crumbs

Michele Morgan #357 athblian nua

My grandmother said
We'll get out
Of this into worse

Hope she's wrong
Happy new year everyone!

Rob Schackne #201 - "You remember the last year"

"You remember the last year"

You remember the last year
and the year before that
and I guess the really bad ones
if you listen, really listen hard
to all that really happened
how the eyes filled with tears
clouds washed in dirty water
love given and love rejected
the dizzy vomitus of air
now the year’s end is coming
forgotten last car on a train
bending fast by the next hill
I mean listen hard enough
one more fading set of lights
seeing the last sun set again
leaves pouring out like bubbles
how these lips were pursed
against this much damaged year
during too much love & regret
and how these eyes will hope
a new year stands still, waiting

Kerri Shying R - # 174 - the deep end

the deep end

I had one long last look
 he took one himself

back into the blue rings of pool life

that deep breath before the dive
 skin hugged to wet skin

shivering in hot sun
 long ago

the black and white towel
 with deep fringing Mum-packed

left fluff along the toes
 when  dried

but we kids never dried on towels we chose
to lie in state  in splendour   thin as greyhounds

whip bellies sticking to the concrete aprons of the
municipality     little blowflies on the screen door

of suburbia    brown before anyone
 gold as butter biscuits

the one time you were
 exquisite

rate that second   eat that gesture  rate it now
let all else leave you unperturbed

Kerri Shying R - # 173 - Route 366

Route 366
 (You lot)

blowing down the Bucketts Way
not thinking  can’t with curves like that

the only task the sticking to the earth   the place
slides round you  green brown mountain

you are driving

you can’t see the scenery    start to
hate   the wows the look at that   the back

seat  swooning   gives you nothing but a headache
on sticking tyres   best replaced last season   attention

to the road   you get told time and time again
don’t take it  too hard too full of risk

but you are driving

fuck the freeway skirt the suburbs
bucketing the way   for us here  now

someone has to drive

Kit Kelen #366.1 - lay me in a shallow shoal (less toxic than this though)

The Mind's Life - Day 29 - Sara Dowse

What a strange unfathomable vessel
is the mind - mine especially
a porous bowl of endlessly drifting thoughts
hard to pin down harder still to capture

My guess is because the mind is less a bowl
than a mirror where a stampede of images
is reflected have you ever wondered
how to catch them as they high-step past

Words too each on its own a packet of fleet-footed
stories folding one into another opening like flowers
blown upon the wind will o’ wisps puffs of breath
rolling as the ocean’s glassy curves and then a crash
you think you understand until the tide pulls back

I pack the year away
my camping gear
at the door

Béatrice Machet # 338 White Tail- 30/12/2016- Lake Michigan-Green Bay Park

# 338       White Tail    30/12/2016  Lake Michigan    Green Bay Park

In the redness of leaves       a white flame
jumping here             and there
set fire in my startled eyes

While dusk was growing darker
and the wind much stronger
I followed the little light       through the dune
to reach the beach    where waves
and waves and more waves     again and again
were licking the sand the way a mother deer
would have licked its newborn fawn

And more white flames arrived
I counted five spirits
curious and cautious     shy and gentle
radiating their natural tenderness
and grace
to my amazed frozen body

Carol Archer - Drawing Breath #31

#34 Janette Hoppe - Reading Mandela

searching for wisdom in these pages
and it is all too common for a native

the slip of tongue,
the insult that others heap onto you
as though they were doing you some kind of service
pointing out     something
you obviously didn't know about
                  'your kind'
because perhaps you're too close to the source

if only I was wise enough
to cover myself in Teflon
that shit would just slide right off
no insult to stick,

no wisdom to be found
us natives -
unlearned,
uneducated.

unchained -
I walk the long way home
connecting with my source
'my kind'
are all wisdom,
all knowing
us natives hold the secrets to land

a foolish man's tongue wags in the wind
the wise man's ear listens to the land
no insult to stick
that shit slides right off
for the land holds all secrets
and us natives hear her whispers
as roars.

Kit Kelen - #366 - 366 - or not going to happen

366
366
or
not going to happen
(indulge this moment's fantasy of self-reflection)

I want them to point and say
there he is!
there's the one who wrote a poem a day
for the whole of the year

and some of them were alright too
I'd know him anywhere
just by style
by voice –
unmistakable!

and it was better than the news
you'd want to hear from him every day
and he was … reliable!

like a paper thrown at your letterbox
but landed right way up
and didn't need too much unwrapping

and he wasn't the only one
there was a whole bunch of them
all at the every day stuff that mattered

what an effort they made!
and they did it together
they were in conversation
they were a community
hard at it
making the heart-and-head stuff –
poetry!

magic – all out of thin air?
not really
more like
they all just kept each other going
like a conversation

really it's unprecedented
who's ever done that before?

were there poetry holidays in there?
any poetry-off days?

well sometimes it
might have got prosaic
and much that was meant
just had to be pictured
but poetry was the spirit of the thing
and the spirit was always there

I want them to say
the punters I mean
I want them to say
o pioneers!
when the world was turning to shit before our eyes
they did this democratic thing
bore witness to each other's truths
and made it part of their day
the work of witness
a kind of standing up to say
I'm in nobody's bottom drawer
I'm present to this world
and sing

it made the day
made mine, made yours
that's what I'd like to hear them say

they were the ones who kept the faith

their politics was poetry
heroes of the deep lost verbiage
heroes picturing

should be borne shoulder high
among adulant crowds
to wear the laurel jubilant
of getting to this day

lyrics licked
and tune enduring
heroes of poetry's community

anthem, jig and flag unfurl
?

but all are victims of a closing cadence
denouement comes to the best

I have this sneaking suspicion
recognition will not

instead
it's more like
look at this sorry collection
they have the poetry disease
him and his sad friends
they have to do it every day

it's like a running nose
this draft of a poem every day
and you're out of the allergy medicine

follow the tissue-strewn path
to the temple, is it
or the ward for hopeless cases?

it was always hard to tell those apart

but what is there to worship at last?

I wonder if there's a way we could help them?

maybe be the best thing we can do
is to politely turn away?
or even if we read
we can pretend that we ignore them

yes they are beyond our help

pretend it hasn't mattered
pretend no difference was made

comrades
let me just say this
bugger the rest of the world
it's off to buggery all by itself
requires none of our help to get there

but
this year was ours too

I wrote for you
you wrote for me
isn't that what counts?
