Jeltje Fanoy #54 Antiquity

For my mother,
a humanist, schooled
in Latin and Greek,
Antiquity was close
to the surface,
why was living
all I'd write about,
fending for myself
with everyday words,
propelled into the now,
by unknown forces,
I should have, she
concluded, regretfully,
tried everything to send
you to a private school

I tried to sympathize,
remember, why,
what, back then,
the girl with
the long,
untidy hair,
conducting choirs
and running in
school sports events,
I was rewarded
with many awards

How many rewards
does a teenager need,
before she'll write,
referring to Antiquity?

  1. Love it. No one in my family talked of antiquity apart from my mother who read a lot but it was no enduring interest. I preferred running too and sometimes outdoor things are the only way to stay sane.

    1. Antiquity... assumed standards of perfection, that sort of thing
