Mikaela Castledine #241 Riffing on The Thought Fox by Ted Hughes

Riffing on The Thought Fox by Ted Hughes

Thought that is never still
fine whiskered
web tensioned
nosing and not sleeping
biting but not eating
returning and returning
where the eggs are
where the chicks are
where the little hairless eyeless
things wriggle
just to gnash them

thoughts barrel tubed just like a body
hollow centred and pyloric
where the masticated meat of each
push peristalsis
nose to tail thoughts
always night filled hot breath filled
resting only when the brush is laid
across eyes that will still be looking
even when all else is quiet hidden

thoughts before and thoughts behind
scruff shaken neck broken

thoughts pointed at the vertices
round ended at the running pads
jumping at the slightest shifting
ineradicable as musk
denning in the dark
