Sarah St Vincent Welch #20 Work

Work

today at work I appreciate
the grazing sheep,
that I checked her water
(as has her owner)
heard her munching
tearing at grass, as above
beside the open window
I force the keyboard
to accept facts,
wrists aching

at work I have appreciated
doughnuts so hot they rolled
and stuck, cinnamon and sugar
dropping from the conveyer belt
into the white paper bag
a Wynyard station morning
every morning.
I unravelled the results
of overseas students.
ate Cambodian curry,
the cheapest lunch, the best

at work I have appreciated
smoking on the back step
leaning on the hoist
and once, gloriously
on the roof
climbing up
the blocked stone steps
finding the locked door
open
and blowing smoke
hanging over the edge

  1. Decided to cut the beginning of the poem. Wish I'd done it before posting. Oh well. Not many good days at work recently, thankfully this stint over, but I've go to find more ... writing poems a salve
