Susan Hawthorne #6 rivers

if earth is her body then rivers are everything that flows
bloodstream and in drought her blood dries on stone
in seasons of too much rain she haemorrhages

controllers of nature want to staunch that flow
dam her precious fluids so that it can be saved and sold
they wonder why the body is out of balance why her eyes stream

with tears that can’t be stopped no matter how much sympathy
the final insult they infibulate the river close off the mouth
prevent the fluids from flowing from breathing with the wind

who will lead the funerals for all the dead rivers not just gone underground

like the ancient Sarsawati but disappeared altogether gone for good
