After midnight- Venice
Standing rowing Venetian style
Francesco and Roberta slid
us silently through the back canals
Francesco has a canal map in his head
It was midnight
No songs from tenors
No taxis tourists shop keepers
No waves crashing into palazzi
or crowded vaporetto
Just the sound of oars
dipping quietly with a gentle
splash
across the Grand Canal
into the lagoon to Lido
So quiet after midnight
Few lights
the moon the guide
I am immersed in the romance
the history and how many had
glided across the lagoon before
us
