Susan Hawthorne #7 thrift

the professor is talking economics to her students
she speaks of the source of spending    of buy buy buy
thinking and asks her students why the TV journalists
are so surprised that we have saved saved saved our

stimulus package monies    is it recession depression
or just a challenge as the politicians prefer to frame it?
no    she explains    it’s known as the paradox of thrift
a phenomenon well known by economists    with

each saver another loses her job    with each banker
propped up the economy drifts into a desert
of spiralling unspending    dry winds blow grasses

are uprooted and everything goes into deanimation
