Mikaela Castledine #47 Black Hematite and Blood

swimming in the dark
it's the only way to go on
a late night visit to the parentsinlaw's pool
the water is silvery
disks of mercury
curls of steel and black hematite
something is bobbing on the surface
and we don't know what it is
but it drifts toward the filter
and we are hot enough for anything
dip in your still over heated head
so all the blood can cool
lapping back
and watching the sky
a browny dust over aubergine
as if the sun
still fierce long past the far horizon
has yet to be completely overshadowed
a sting on the hand
possibly a wasp but who can tell
in the smallbeam of the phone's torch
we call goodnight
as we drip past
the yellow shine of the bedroom window
driving home on a fold of towelling
diving into bed still damp
acclimatising eventually into sleep
