Chrysogonus #64 - the calligrapher

the calligrapher

we met in the orchid garden
a pot of tea waits
among petals and a brush
the grip of years has known

a smile blooms on his lips
wrinkles retire
to the jawline's edges
so his youth breaks out

and now the story
of his one and only peony
he left for this garden
forty-five years ago

an old man's first love
comes alive
seeing the grandson
of the woman he loved

so he paints my surname
a first cup for the story's beginning
a reminisce of homecoming
fifteen years past now

a second character
gold in black ink
tears smeared
unsaid farewell

petals lost
one after another
colours faded
into lifelessness

last silver character down
tears fallen to his tea
quench thirst
now the wrinkles return

he hands me the scroll
on memory's behalf
one stroke for ten or more stories
fragrance of peony still

pertemuan di taman anggrek
sepoci teh duduk menanti
bersama kelopak dan kuas
yang mengenal sekujur telapaknya

senyum merekah di bibirnya
kerut wajah seakan menyingkir
jauh ke tepi garis batas rahang
masa mudanya menyeruak muka

terkisah kini kenangan lama
satu kembang peoni tercinta
yang jauh lama ia telah tinggalkan
empat puluh lima tahun yang lalu

cinta pertama sang lelaki tua
kembali hidup dan bernafas
dalam pandang akan cucu
wanita yang pernah ia cinta

di kertas ia toreh margaku
cangkir pertama awal cerita
perjalanan pulang perdananya
lima belas tahun yang lalu

karakter kedua mulai nampak
emas dalam garis tinta pekat
ternoda leleh air mata
perpisahan yang tak sempat terucap

kelopak kembang yang gugur
satu, dua, susul-menyusul
warna-warni menguap pudar
hingga tinggal raga tanpa nyawa

karakter terakhir tertulis perak
air mata menyeduh cangkir teh
mengalau dahaga, membawa kembali
kerut muka menghias rupa

ia ulurkan gulungan kertas
tertulis atas nama kenangan
sepuluh atau lebih cerita di tiap gores
bayang keharuman peoni masih tinggal

  1. so tenderly lovely, Chrys.. how the old man creates you from his art and from his body (tears, wrinkles, brushstrokes). A sort of retrospective fathering...
