unidentified flying
mammal
who were you?
first thing leaping, flew?
cat or possum, quoll
or who?
after last stars
a streak of richly furred and fled
could have been Norwegian
eucalyptus lost
tear off
hear a wingswoop
lost the scent
past fresh blown roses
tower, shed
gone!
I saw you in first light
a flash
an after-scar in consciousness
the question that you left
as any owl might ask
black cockies, kookaburras hunting
turn wormward
to some dewfresh new lit chow
because the slope was mowed just now
the grub is gone that raised a head
when could have pointed down instead
but you, nameless, and into the trees
it was by your fine example
I saw
how all of us are passing
mystery to mystery
no one ever to know
who each is, who we are
but after much thought and several subsequent sightings
I have become quite convinced
that you
my flighty spectacle
were next door's naughty cat
