Richard Tipping - Everlasting Stone #8 - Evolution Sucks

Evolution Sucks, 1976. Black granite, engraved letters, goldleaf. Dimensions: H 42 x W 35 x D 6 cm. Font design by John Glasson, stone mason. Made in Adelaide in 1976, this is the first of the Everlasting Stone series of 'minimal poems' made between 1976 and 2016 in granite, marble and stone.
Two examples of Evolution Sucks were made. One (#1) is in the collection of the estate of Brett Whiteley, Sydney, bought from the solo exhibition Airpoet at Robin Gibson Gallery in 1980; the other (#2) has been repaired after damage caused during moving by a collector. This sculpture (#2) was refused as a donation to the Art Gallery of South Australia in 2015, which has to be a compliment. This photograph shows #1 on the edge of a quarry which was once near to Glenmore Road in Paddington, Sydney, in 1980. A clever real estate developer realised that the huge emptiness provided a free spot for a subterranean car park!
