me and the plankton

the plankton and I

rise in the light from the lapping

bloom and spread and shine

there's grazing and growing

of lolling there's lots, larking about

zoo feed on phyto to feed the fish

I can be nutrient too

and seasonally adjusted

by means of vertical migration

I could graduate to nekton

or (for a lifestyle choice)

go sessile on the seafloor

turbulent mixing will re-suspend me

parasites and predation!

let me be free-swimming

or fade and finally fall to stone

be planet mass, not merely

that's how I'm part of the whole
