other people's houses
are the sets of my dreams
I run and sometimes
fly from room to room
through the front yard
down the driveway
and into the pool
the unfenced pool
since this set is
40 years old
and these houses
belonged to the parents
of my schoolboy friends
and my schoolground
is the set of my dreams
but now when I drive past
the monkey bars are gone
the netball court is gone
the asphalt is gone
replaced with more buildings
and shadecloth
the windows that we opened
with long poles
are permanently shut
and blocked
with air conditioners
and it's unsettling
because I spent
so much time
at the old place
and continue
to do so
these old places
are the sets of my dreams
I don't care what
you think it means
