Nanna called them locusts.
People say they ‘croak’
or ‘sing’.
That’s not a cicada.*
Think sprinkler
rattlesnake
castanet
cabasa
tambourine
glass beads poured
in splendour falls of
broken increment on
snare drum speeding
perforations meeting
intense ball gown swish
unchained ball bearing spilling
bead shower curtain frothing
coffee
machine gun pot perking zipper
ripping
seed sizzling ecstasy strewing
dervish frenzy
ZZT ZZZT ZZZZZT ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT
…!
This is a cicada.
*The numerous breeds of cicada make numerous different sounds.
The White Wednesday has a very particular ‘waltz’.
