#49 Kevin Brophy ‘Everyone agreed it was a success’

At the poetry reading
The ducks were asleep
At the back
The trees remained undisturbed
The plastic chairs sank
A little further into the lawn
The sun kept its distance
The river did not cease
To sparkle
The young women looked down
Into the shining screens
In their laps
The poets kept to the timetable
More or less
The garden peacocks did themselves
Water was mentioned
More than once
Ovaries only once and petals
Several more times
Finches were important
To one poem
And the sky too was there
As the biggest and blankest

Metaphor of them all.

  1. I like this description of a poetry reading very much. The metaphors are striking especially this one:

    The plastic chairs sank
A little further into the lawn

    You are a constant inspiration.
