'Breathing is pure performance art.' (George Szirtes)
To say you haven't done anything
today is wrong. If you're
still breathing above ground
you're still doing something.
It is a continuation. Who else
bathes the dog, gives her
her eye drops? It isn't nothing
to help another living creature.
Act upon act happened today.
So the neighbour didn't notice
you gone for two weeks -
so what? She knows you're
home now. (The dog just
crapped on her nature strip.)
Now it's silent night. Dog
asleep, grandchildren asleep,
wife in bed. More will happen
tomorrow. This breathing is
an essential part of the show.
