Mark Roberts #22 Slide 21 Spring Creek. 'Holmside' Lidster, via Orange. Circa 1968

Spring Creek ran through the bottom paddock
and under Cargo Road near the front gate.
You could see the eroded creek bank
from the old wooden milking shed.  The cows
crossed it further up, on the Nashdale end
of the paddock, where the banks slopped gently down.
On the Cargo side of the paddock there was a small
makeshift wooden bridge that allowed you to cross
and walk to the gate.

I had discovered at school that I was better
than average at long jump and when I was eight
decided to take a short cut and jump the creek.
It was easy. I told Mill to watch and ran
straight at the creek, imagining a board
six inches from the edge - I sailed through
the sky and landed on my left foot.
No need for sand I kept running.

Now I look at a map and try and work out
where the creek started and where it flowed to.
It seems to just start a few kilometres
from the old farm and ends just past
Bowan Park Road. It flows from nowhere
to nowhere. A spring that just runs out
........................................- a sad creek.

  1. Good one Mark, I like the tone you achieve with these memories.
