we drove through sixties surf music country
Beach boys
and the country
of stories- Steinbeck
it took all day to arrive at Santa Cruz
his custom made acoustic
guitar sounded smooth

he had a plan for the return trip
overnight in Carmel
he showed me Pebble beach
and the tree

the next day we found an Italian
providore in this white place
rolls made for lunch
we ate them long before lunch
he drove us down the
Pacific highway
I looked across and down to Australia
(time to go home)
we stopped in Big Sur
for another lunch
the telephone reached me
my lost luggage had been found
days before leaving for Australia
