Magdalena Ball #5: Salvation Jane

Salvation Jane

Easy to please
like a weed in dying grass
inedible, impractical

here at your feet
nostalgia raging through
my fleshy taproot
as if it were love

if you were to try and find me
an artificial construct in time
pretending to be simple
hiding in plain sight
among disintegrating leaves
in the privileged present

a unity without parts
emerging from deeper structure
words making sentences
stem-clasping form
as substance

stillness in colour
stimulating your retina

a ghost taking life in the visual system

soft hairs grade into
heart shaped bracts
a trick of the light
approximated

played out in memory
buried as mourning
pulled out by the root
burned, forgotten, ignored

I’ll come back for you.
