Mark Roberts #10 Slide 9 Rocks Creek, Mitchell Highway, NSW circa 1969

Rocks Creek Mitchell Highway

We always counted how many times
we crossed Rocks Creek
between Bathurst and Lucknow
and always got a different result.

It was as if the route of the road
changed every time we drove
over the mountains and down
the other side to Orange.

Looking back I’m surprised
more creeks don’t weave
their way back and under roads
again and again,

or did colonial planners
try and avoid crossing coiling
slithering creek lines too often
just in case.
