It was a steep climb down from the carpark
eskies, towels, and hampers
most crossed the mossy rocks without pause
content to risk a fall –
the lagoon an invitingly cool respite
as the sun moved directly overhead
on that blisteringly cruel day
we were young, impatient and
luckier than we knew
not to have caught an ill-fated mountains train.
