Susan Hawthorne #366 at Brewarrina

DP 366 at Brewarrina

at Brewarrina lies the oldest
human construction
they are fish traps
minimum age estimate
is 40,000 years

schoolchildren in Australia
should be leaping for joy
but this is not in
the curriculum

another ancient artwork
is ignored in Italy
it is a woman with a wolf head
all the sources say it is
300,000 years old

the fish traps were constructed
by Aboriginal people
the wolf-headed woman
probably by a woman

is there something here
we can learn?

* If you want to know more about the ancient fish traps, read Bruce Pascoe's book, Dark Emu. If you want to know more about the wolf-headed woman, see my book, Lupa and Lamb or go to the blog I wrote while I was in Rome in 2013:

Probably yes but who cares ..... that's what makes me feel angry sometimes ... anyway, nice poem!
