He told her
come Monday
he would give her
a crystal
he had found on his land
because you are kind
he said
He was the boy
in her class
who when they made
mothers day cards
told her
in a manner
dumbfounded
and free of bitterness
that he could think of
nothing to draw
on the card
as the only thing his mother loved
were cigarettes
Oh Claine, social realism on the cutting edge - these are so poignant and wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I even cried a bit when I wrote this. I am having the crystal I was given set in my grandmother's engagement ring as the piece of glass in that has fallen out. I should have written another verse about that!
DeleteI can picture this so clearly. Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rob x
DeleteFabulous poem Claine - I can see this so vividly too. Fantastic & oh so poignant :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Kristen, I will never forget the boy I wrote this about.
