I was washed by the tide
sometimes for a whole day
I waited like he
told me
My stamina of course
has always betrayed me
Patient and obliging like cattle
this is how I was taught to be
Now I see him bringing herds
into a place too small for them
while he dreams of somewhere far away
an urbane whiteness
filled with dentist chairs
and undressed waitresses
Wow, scary. The shift in imagery through the poem is very effective both visually and emotinally.
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan every poem is an adventure. I write the truth and just hope that my truth can be understood by others. I look forward to reading and responding to your poems over the school holidays when I have more time.
DeleteYes its scared me too, wonderfully.
