Magdalena Ball #27: Swimming with a ghost

Swimming with a ghost

The water is warm enough today
my ghost hates cold

her body shakes out memories
the ocean a conduit drawing her

milky eyes drive my arms into a rhythm
one hundred laps, a metaphor

for our connection that won’t sever
the freedom she never had

her thwarted life, this stride a relative density
we move together, slowly, in sync

the motion of breath, waves overlapping
another valid state, interference peaks

as always, there’s no progress
my ghost doesn’t believe in time

she draws strength from a thousand scars
a voice that urges: keep swimming.
