Cui Yuwei 2#--Mid-Autumn Night

Mid-Autumn Night

Written by Cui Yuwei

the moon slants through my window
round and yellow as usual except
for a little difference in the thin clouds
drifting around
tonight they’re translucent like the tentacles
of a jellyfish
the neighbourhood is quiet
people are out watching the moon
after a few minutes of staring
I feel it dissolve into something drinkable
those guys on the beach much be drunk with joy now
there’s nothing I can drink
with them under this primordial satellite
that has lived through many false stories
the truth now is it’s too faraway
to be thought a beautiful token
as far back as I remember mum never said so
just a moment ago she told me on the phone
at her place the moon was luminescent however
she was about to go to bed early because I wasn’t home
so there was no need to prepare a dinner
no better night than this
for me to better understand
how my fate resembles hers
I’m reliving her, the one
at the other end of an umbilical cord
and tonight
our loneliness is filled
with moonlight

  1. This is a terrific poem, Yuwei. So many fine images shimmering through it. Generous. Gentle as the moonlight. :)
