afternoon sun in 1897
Pissarro's 'Boulevard Montmartre'
two months
all times of light
carriage blur
hats stay affixed
every one of these windows
a fire to warm, some drama
up over the street
the boulevard is a vanishing mirror
time takes the far few there
as if to peace
where time is left
by way of the canvas
the colour, the oil
neither work nor play
but rolling out the century
foot by footfall
hats off passing
and under a familiar face
from a room in the Grand Hotel de Russie
two months – one mirror from the street
you wouldn't know what went on there
it's not the chimneys make these clouds
although they point that way
