Mother said
beware the unknown houses
the sweat on pillowcases of strange men
and where still there is the
sound
of the rustling apparel
of unsavoury women
and the howls of parents
who have lost their children
My mother teaches me to be afraid of everything. This poem speaks in a metaphorical way about the wide scope of her fears. I am considering accepting a male tenant (who I do not know) as someone who may rent the studio space next to my house and she is terrified.
I'm trying to imagine the context in which a mother might have said these things

ReplyDeletegood luck with all that!
Thanks Kit, I hope this explained the context of the poem. It is always great to have questions asked about one's writing.
