Susan Hawthorne #363 a scrappy villanelle for christmas 2016

they say it's a day for cheer
instead we shake with fear
hooray hooray bring on world war three
the trumpets are full of blare
jobs for the boys this year
we loathe to think they'll swear
on a god neither here nor there
they say it's a day for cheer
hooray hooray bring on world war three
the family tree is dwindling
the empty bough is cracked
corporates see nought but kindling
the ground beneath is fracked
and the greatest powers swindling
hooray hooray bring on world war three
they tell us speech is free
the loudspeakers all ablare
the loudest shout me me me
porn's free but nothing's fair
they say it's a day for cheer
hooray hooray bring on world war three

* In case you think I'm in wrist-slitting territory, not so. I just worry about the future. Poetry, art, animals and the people I love keep me going.
