Kit Kelen #1149 - in their burrows and hutches

1149
in their burrows and hutches

in the open air, through windows
up through leaky roofs

all paws and claws
in fairytale calm of flag wrap

scuttled, unknown even to themselves
all intending, aware, alive to

possum play, rabbit ears up
these flown to wear the wings away

some falling, other soar
and often in the act of vanish

come along with opportunity
beside selves, not quite smitten

all eyes and unwashed whiff
or nearly drowned at times

alight with love
often in their music tender

delving and up above
amidst, on with

meaning to mean, strew
cast themselves as symbols

hunkered storm over
dark draperies of tendril touch

following a dotted line
in pity of the objects

under these skins infra-red detected
weather numbed, seasons adjusted

in furs, in feathers
each weary with resemblances

soul and nous, head to them
beat by beaten heart at home

precarious by their complexion
furiously smitten

lodged in their sweat or huddled
some counting to a loss

creeping and lurk
so many shaped like a prayer

supplicants now and in the hour
often after gone to rot

and ringing in
dark to their own hearts

joy bright
these creatures we all are
