KA Rees #38 - Song for Karen

Song for Karen

Another iced tea? They say, too small behind the drum kit
you could use some pillows to prop yourself up with.
Ma says it’s not very ladylike playing drums in a band
and you know, it was Richard they wanted in the music biz.

But it’s hard to take a back seat when you’ve got a three octave range,
it’s hard when they want someone centre stage, but I always
considered myself a drummer first. So little control, so little control—

slide things back a bit. I choose not to eat. Another iced tea?
Another green salad? They say, use your lower range, that’s why
the money’s in the basement
but I believe hand on heart, it’s a woman’s job to cook
for her husband. I’m getting smaller every day

but I’m bigger much bigger in every way.
