A Distant Conversation
If the map is not the territory
and the signpost doesn’t walk
in the direction it’s pointing
if the surface tension is right
and birds that fly in formation
have only a general idea of me
if the tenor of an argument
has become a generalised shout
I can pick up and go any time I want
then here we finally are again
no signpost no birds no pool
where we can walk or fly or swim
the map doesn’t walk
and the signpost doesn’t fly
and the formation looks all wrong
