Chris Mansell #18 a chucklebird

These bowerbirds are currently conducting their energetic affairs in my garden. There is a bower where the blueblack shiny male has made a not very impressive display of blue things. Many of the green females congregate and he does his special display with special sounds and special prancing about which seems to be approved of. Then there is a flurry and then another female is there. They literally line up. The particular male is young, and skinny, but they seem to prefer him to the plumper male who appears sometimes to steal blue objects from him. I've seen as many as four females at a time queue up, though in this poem I've restricted it to just two.

  3. Yes jeltje! I love checking them out. They've taken over the place and the veges have had to be netted because they like the new leaves of almost anything (tomatoes, parsley, zuchs...) and other people around here complain about theirs madly but I love watching them. The girls are so bossy. And they bounce like sparrows rather than walk, which is odd for birds of their size.

    2. Hadn't thought of that. It's exactly the way I do look at them btw - through the square bathroom windows. :-)

  5. Excellent!! Makes me feel like we're a bunch of oldies witnessing and trying to fathom the irrestibility of some skanky arsed young guy surrounded by teenage girls.
