Cecilia White #3 When they ask you to explain my habit (Note to the Muse)

When they ask you to explain my habit (Note to the Muse)

When they ask you to explain my habit
Keep silent, look somewhere else
Point to a possibility sparkling
On a hill they could chase for themselves
Far away. Keep them there

You are my protector
Divert their eyes from my cause
And I will pause to reward you only
With my gaze, a drunken caress
Beyond all grace and meaning

I have no time for enquiry
Nor desire to justify my practice
It is more than they can imagine
Strangers as they are to a natural song
Stand at my door and keep me

At a distance from those others
Watch how I bicker with material gods
And tear at their robes
To fashion wings from a sky
You convinced me was all mine.
