John Bennett #19 Bush walk on an anniversary

“We talk about the conquest of space. The conquest of Everest. And the great symbols of our culture are the rocket and the bulldozer.” Alan Watts, ‘The Nature of Consciousness’.
Today is the 40th anniversary of his death.

I walk quietly, a pair of ears poke through the Blady Grass
and twitch, a pale flower head bounces as a Lewin’s Honeyeater
takes off from a Bottle Brush Grass Tree. As I approach
a goanna races up a tree keeping the trunk between us.

The forest sidesteps me, my camera and binoculars,
as I, being no sage, hunt for the details.

“When a Taoist sage is wandering through the forest, he is not going anywhere, he is just wandering.” Alan Watts, The Way of Liberation.

    1. Thanks Liz - one day I will get around to trying to integrating text and image. Made tricky by English not using ideographs and my tendency to write longer poems.
