#97 Kevin Brophy ‘Estuarine’

The unsleeping eye of a pond
dreams its crocodile to the green surface.

Each one in the skin of a dragon
has its yellow eye on the promise that was given.

Only the thirsty come in the evening
driven by another promise that was given.

Keep birds in cages, keep the wallabies
in the shade, move slowly and talk quietly.

You will see the dark shadow move in the pond
like sleep itself in the corner of the night

refusing to show itself until you have bent
to its promise of deliverance from all thirst.

  1. stunning (and oozing with menace). The dark shadow moving 'like sleep itself in the corner of the night' is genius
