Chrysogonus' Translation #43 - from Brian Purcell's "The wandering stars"

Bintang Kelana

Bintang kelana berkelip atas kita
bagai wanita menggigil di tepi api
lelah mata ingin tertutup
mimpi akan menghilang dalam gelap
pada amuk gelap mata suami
yang lenyap dan ia terseret terdampar
pada halaman yang ia ketahui
tapi tak terbaca, janji tersirat
di mata anak-anaknya
kala perisai dewata jatuh dan langit
tak bermalaikat
bernyanyi tanpa sepi
keabadian di balik bayangan
papan iklan dan bangunan pengoyak langit
maju meninggalkan perjuangan kosong
dan menepi, dan melihat
setiap bagian tubuhnya merangkak pergi
dari bagian hidup yang tak lagi ia butuhkan
untuk berbicara dan menangis
dengan suara malaikat
yang berjalan di bumi
malaikat, yang bersedia

berjalan di bumi

The wandering stars that blink weakly down on us
as a woman shudders on the fire escape
barely able to close her eye
dreams of disappearing into dark matter
where her husband’s incandescent rage can be
snuffed out and she can drift
opening pages of herself she knew
but couldn’t read, a promise glimpsed
in the eyes of her children
when god’s shield slipped and the sky
was emptied of angels
to sing without loneliness
to see eternity beyond the silhouettes
of billboards and buildings scraping the sky
to move beyond this empty struggle
and drift and see
every part of herself move out and away
from the parts of her life she no longer needs
to speak and sing
with the voice of an angel
who walks on the ground
an angel, glad
to walk on the earth
