Lucy Alexander #27 Together

Will you teach me
how to make friendship
the way you suddenly make sleep
from the darkness’ weaving
or massive tears from
movements of the heart?

Show me that together
laughter crowds down
all over us like water
and grows us like fire:
with one another the wood
is more than single trees?

And there will be days like today
where smoke from the cooking fire
trembles the air like old glass
and we come home, all smelling
like burnt grasses and crackling leaves

tied up together by strands of
the things we did
that one day will seem so long ago
and here’s photographic proof:
we were together and we knew
how good it was.
