Susan Hawthorne #272 butterflies in FNQ, for Efi

when the butterflies hover en masse
you know a cyclone is on its way

in Far North Queensland
are some of the biggest and most
colourful butterflies in the world

Ulysses is well known from posters
iridescent blue that shimmers at you
they like it if you wear their blue

Cairns birdwing far less known
enormous green and red
and definitely a cyclone caller

often seen in threes
as they dance around the garden
in shifting waltzes of colour

butterflies get all the glory over moths
the Hercules moth is so big I thought
it was a bat my dog knew otherwise

the four o'clock moth is dazzling
in its colour so I thought it was a butterfly

  1. Ah, thank you for this morning's lovely poem! I love the idea that butterflies are cyclone callers, and that Ulysses "like it if you wear their blue". You live in paradise, Susan!
