from inside the car I watch

a brown leaf from a liquid amber

flopping onto the sleek back window

of a Lexus

looking where this might take me

thinking that autumn leaves mean autumn

all up and down our particular street

piles of leaves blowing into drifts

the seasons loosen their definitions

the wind feels like a springtime wind

but I resist the images of dark rooms

and mysterious stairwells
