There are many types of cold at night

The cold the blanket does not begin to fight

Cold air that creeps along the arm to lift each hair

Cold that rises from below like damp

or gathers glittering like frost

Isolated cold in fingers or feet

or cold that lies on one side only

in someone’s stead

Cold that is stone, steady and stays

even into morning.
