Kit Kelen - for a Series with Jack Picone's photographs - #28 - Sarajevo

28
Sarajevo

dodging
sniper shot
mortar
machine gun fire
launched rockets
dodging
bombs from the air
and just our luck

the town was always
some kind of wedding

mosque and synagogue
churches and fountains
markets and baths

the town was always
some kind of union
death, divorce parts

and here's love among the ruins
red resin – Sarajevo rose

wedding of the bullet
with the Prince
so centuries were wed here

take one world down
another comes

Sarajevo
the word is a poem
the plains around the palace
the governor's castle
this Jerusalem
Damascus

river rock
hear hills sing

always
some kind
of wedding
here

a life and death thing
the red line –
11,541 chairs empty
1,500 of them children

sniper shot
mortar
machine gun fire
launched rockets
bombs from the air
and that was just their luck
