Robert Verdon, #418, surprise

Someone banging on my roof
(or nextdoor?)
head out onto the shaded patio, then
into my garden, look up:
there, on the corner, is a yellow-eyed
currawong, trying to break a nut against the
hot tin.
Oh, it’s you!, I cry, as if to someone I know.

  1. the very word currawong in itself is already worth a poem!

  2. an Aboriginal word for the yellow-eyed crow, not sure of the literal translation.

  4. bird makes great noise
    trying to crack nuts
    in the early morning
    against our tired skulls
    after late night corroboree
    much singing and dancing
    is the literal translation
    of currawong I think
